Michael Holmes & Janet Thomas
Co-Founders, Pathfinder Education Consulting
Pathfinder was founded by a husband-and-wife team with two very different, yet highly complementary, backgrounds. Michael spent 26 years in university enrolment management, engaged with recruitment, admissions, and the student experience, and culminating in his role as Director of the International Department at Acadia University. He repeatedly saw how often good students end up at the wrong schools because of a lack of proper research and poorly informed decisions. Janet brings 33 years of HR and corporate supply chain, logistics, and procurement leadership at Minas Basin Pulp and Power and most recently with CKF Inc. — a career built on designing rigorous, repeatable processes for complex decisions. Together, they founded Pathfinder to bring that same rigour to one of the most consequential, least systematized decisions a family will make.

In-depth interviews — separately with the student and with parents — covering academic profile, interests, personality, lifestyle preferences, and career aspirations. This isn't a questionnaire; it's a conversation designed to surface what actually matters to this student.

We don't write or edit application essays, manage applications, track deadlines, or guarantee admission anywhere. What every family does receive: for your top 3 shortlisted universities, a clear overview of the admission and entrance scholarship process, plus direct contacts for the admissions office, financial aid office, and campus visits office — so you're never starting from zero. The application itself is yours to lead.

Rankings measure prestige and research output — not whether a school fits your child's learning style, personality, or goals. And Canadian guidance counsellors often carry caseloads in the hundreds, leaving little room for individualized planning. Pathfinder exists in the gap between the two: personalized, in-depth, and focused entirely on fit.

Most of our clients begin the process in Grade 10 or 11, though we work with families throughout Grades 10 through 12 depending on where they are in the process.

No — and we'd be cautious of anyone who does. What we guarantee is a thorough, honest, well-researched recommendation. The stronger the fit, the stronger the application tends to be, but admission decisions ultimately rest with the universities.

Discovery interviews take 2–3 hours in total. Research and analysis typically takes 2–3 weeks. From your first conversation with us to receiving your Pathfinder Report is usually about four weeks.

Yes. Pathfinder's research and recommendations are focused entirely on Canadian degree-granting universities. It's a deliberate choice — going deep on one system, rather than spreading thin across international admissions processes that work very differently, is what lets us do this level of research per student.
